Location Sponsor: Research Park

May 16th, 2011   Kevin Van Lierop We would like to acknowledge the Research Park at the University of Western Ontario for opening the Convergence Centre for the second year in a row as the location for PodCamp 2011. Without their involvement we would have had a much harder time putting on this event. The Convergence Center is the newest building at the Research Park, officially opening on January 20th, 2010. The building is one of the most advanced and “greenest” office and laboratory buildings in Canada. The building’s mandates it to provide the oppurtunity for government, academia and industry to work together to build and grow the economy of southwestern Ontario. Additionally, specific space was designated for early stage startups. As one of the greenest buildings in Canada the Convergence Centre has been designated as LEED Gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and has made a concentrated effort to reduce their environmental footprint during both construction and operations. PodCamp London is excited to be able to host London Ontario’s annual UnConference dedicated to social and emerging media in this collaborative and engaging workspace. We hope that on June 11th you take some time to appreciate the generousity of The Research Park in opening their space to us.

“It’s a Change”

Apr 5th, 2011   Bill Deys

We've had a few reactions to a change we made for this years event. We figured we would get some questions about that and already had ideas as to what we'd say but wanted to sit back and gauge what the community had to say.

So we announced the date and opened registration, sat back and watched. It didn't take long to get a few comments. Actually, less then I had expected. After a bit I said I'd get a post up explaining our move. I had every intention on doing that last Friday, I had the post mostly written, lost it and got distracted by some personal issues, sorry but somethings take precedence.

So, if you've made the jump over to register you've seen that this year PodCamp London costs money to register.

Short answer, we want to create a barrier to make the conference better.

Longer answer. It's hard to plan a conference when you don't really know how many people will show up. Take last year for example. With 250+ registrants, we know there will be no shows which is fine to a degree. When it's 25%, or more, it makes it very hard to budget things like food. Our hope is to stop people who don't add value to the overall conference or register to get their name on the list and don't plan to attend. It should raise the value, maybe to two bucks, and make our job easier.

Anyways, the vast majority of funding for PodCamp London comes from the sponsors. Out of the $1.99 registration fee we get less then half. And, we have thought of those that for some reason can't pay the fee, no credit card or PayPal account maybe. If you can't, contact one of the organizers, we'll hook you up.
